With Winter fast approaching, now is the time to start nurturing ourselves and preparing our bodies for the climatic shift.
Today I share with you my sinus rinse, a remedy I've used for the last decade or more.
You will need:
- 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- mug of warm water
- nasal aspirator (available from pharmacies)
Stir the salt and bicarb into the warm water until dissolved. Fill the aspirator with saline. Blow your nose. Then, blocking your left nostril, insert the aspirator into your right nostril and squeeze the contents into your nose as you breathe in. The saline will flow through your sinuses and down the back of your throat into your mouth. Spit the saline into the basin. Do not swallow.
Repeat the exercise alternating between nostrils until a small amount of saline remains. Gargle with the rest. Blow your nose again. It will pour for a while as it cleanses.
Don't worry if your nose stings a bit the first time you try this technique. It won't hurt again with subsequent repeats.
Do this sinus rinse frequently during and before winter to keep your sinuses and nasal passages free of infection.
And remember to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables with loads of vitamin C, so as to ward of the winter flus and bacterial infections.
Foods rich in vitamin C:
citrus fruits
pineapple
mango
green peppers
but remember all fresh fruits and vegetables contain some vitamin C.
So eat your colours!
And be healthy this winter!
love
Nicolette
